When adjusting the belts, use a setting of 28 lbs on the tool for the balance shaft belt. Tool comes marked with this setting. Ensure that the indicator arm of the belt tool is placed directly on a belt tooth and not in a space between the teeth. The cam belt gets tensioned to 40 lbs. When completed, use the tool to set the A/C-Alternator belt tension to 85 lbs. Click on any image to the left to get a full size photo.
For all cars, you will need to remove the smooth cam roller and metal belt guide rail if your car has the updated waterpump to perform this procedure for the cam belt. Once the belt is tensioned, simply reinstall the idler and belt guide. If you have an autotensioner on your car, use of the tool is not required to set the cam belt, but can be used to set the balance and A/C belts.
Like anything else, this requires some practice. However in 5 minutes you should be a pro at it! Take 5 readings in a row to see if you can get the same result. Care needs to be exercised to ensure you do not bump the needle on the belt cover or waterpump pulley or the reading will be inaccurate.
Do not forget to adjust the balance shaft belt idler roller. It requires 1mm preload on the belt on the top side and 0.5mm gap at the lower balance shaft location. This should be done BEFORE setting the final tension on the balance shaft belt.
